Founded in April of 2020, ROSE began as the 'GSRC Community' server, and later rebranded to 'Rainbow Carleton' in the fall of 2020. Our original purpose was simply to provide social connection to 2SLGBTQIA+ Carleton students during the pandemic.
As time went on and our membership grew, we began running events and creating support programs like the Affirming Gear Program. Then, we launched our first ever protest action against a transphobe attacking the autonomy and right of trans youth to exist. The community's response was incredible, from participation to fundraising to social media engagement.
After this we determined that we should expand our mandate and begin formally widening our membership, and thus the Rainbow Ottawa Student Experience was born.
Rainbow Ottawa Student Experience (ROSE) is dedicated to providing community and support to 2SLGBTQIA+ students and youth on unceded Algonquin Anishinabeg territory in a way consistent with anti-oppression, and the principles of accessibility, equity, and compassion.
We are committed to engaging in progressive activism to further the rights, safety, and health of Queer and Trans people, and those of other marginalized groups in solidarity.
Here's what our members are saying...
”I am thankful for all you've done with ROSE, the server has been a life saver for me.
It's really awesome that you've been maintaining this great community for our benefit”
- Avery Smith
"I wanted to give a hearty thank you to everyone attending the protest.
It means a lot to see like a community willing to protect trans kids as someone who was a trans kid and didn't have that support in youth."
"ROSE sure is gay! (In the good way!)"
- David S.
